Helping students craft compelling college essays that stand out

The personal statement is a way for college admissions readers to get to know who you are and how you think. But it also purposefully challenges you to try your hand at an entirely new way of writing—one that you’ve never been asked to take on before. The personal statement is, of course, personal, and so you’re being asked to reflect on yourself.

That’s not easy. But it’s an essential step toward preparing yourself for college writing, which often involves deep reflection about what you think you already know, and what you do not yet understand (but would like to learn).

I can be with you every step of the way on this journey toward re-envisioning yourself as a college applicant, as a student, and as a writer.

Having the follow-up meetings where you helped cut down my ideas from an outside perspective was very helpful and felt completely judgment-free rather than if a kid were to ask a parent or friend doing the same. You also helped me feel in control of my essay rather than like it was this giant obstacle. Having a plan after our meetings and working one step at a time really broke down the process and made it more enjoyable.

I had no idea where to start when I began writing my personal statement and college supplementals. Working with Julie I was able to work out step by step how to develop ideas and turn them into essays. She was able to explain things in a clear and concise way allowing me to create something truly personal.

I really recommend working with Julie to anyone who might not know how to start writing a college essay.

In the spring of my junior year I had no idea what a personal statement even was, let alone how to actually write one. However, Julie was able to guide me through the process of picking an interesting topic, that would be both personal and eye catching to admissions officers, as well as how to effectively write what is arguably one of the most important essays you will write during your high school career.

During our meetings, she helped me to approach my writing in a new way that would allow me to be as personal and real as possible in order to truly show admissions officers who I was. This is the whole point of your personal statement: to give admissions officers an extra glimpse into who you are. And I can guarantee, if it was not for Julie’s advice, my essay would have been completely cliche and not memorable in the slightest.
